Elbow Dysplasia is a developmental bone disease of the front limb that usually occurs in large breed dogs around 6 months of age or older.
The image above is from a 1 year old German Shephard dog with a history of front leg lameness for the past 5 months. This particular dog has 2 disease processes noted on the Xray.
The ulna bone shows a hazy white appearance denoted by the white arrows. This hazy appearance is due to a disease called Panosteitis. Panosteitis is a young dog disease due to an inflammation of the bone (common in German shephards, but possible in many breeds) that generally resolves with pain relievers and time. However, a second boney lesion is denoted by the black arrows. This radiographic abnormality is due to a FRAGMENTED Medial Coronoid Process. This elbow lesion will not resolve with time and arthritis of this joint will develop.
